No sound from Moog Sub 37 connected to Babyface audio

Post by djbenski » Fri Jul 28, 2017 5:21 am

Hi all,

I have a Babyface RME Pro connected to my Macbook laptop and Moog Sub 37 synth. I have MIDI setup but cannot get any sound from the Moog during monitoring enabled or playback during recording sessions in Ableton Live 9. I have the Ableton settings for MIDI and MIDI communication is showing good status from Ableton for the Babyface and Moog. Any ideas what I am doing wrong here? I have the Moog connected via USB and MIDI cables to the Macbook and Babyface RME MIDI ports. Here are my setups:

Now I can get sound from the monitor speakers and Babyface RME Pro for other setups so I know these work and the Moog works as well.

One of the midi connections should be enough.
You don't talk about any audio connection from the Moog into the Babyface, and while your Track 1 in Live is labled External Instrument, you haven't made a screenshot of that device.

The External Instrument device configures a midi output and an audio input - your Moog should be connected to that same audio input on the Babyface.

So to get sound the Babyface has a split cable would I just have one MIDI cable plugged into the Babyface and the other end to the Moog output MIDI interface?
If you do have an example of how you were able to get your setup working with a screenshot to follow that would be super helpful and awesome then I can test and see if the issue still exists! My Ableton Push works fine but not the Moog :-(

The way I have cables connected from Babyface to Moog Sub 37:

So question is why no audio recorded or heard from the Moog that is connected to both Macbook (Apple Mac OS X Sierra) via USB and MIDI into the Babyface?

I tried both external instrument, VST plugin, and MIDI direct connections. Still no luck.

Here is a video of my setup along with my frustrations getting it all to work!

Pardon the swearing but a royal PITA!

The latter image is the same as the first!

You need to study the manual. Specifically 24.4 External Instrument where you can read this among all other things:
"The Audio From chooser provides options for returning the audio from the hardware synth, plug-in, or ReWire device. If you’re routing to a hardware synth, use this chooser to select the ports on your audio interface that are connected to the output of your synth. The available choices you’ll have will depend on the settings in the Audio Preferences."
(my bold)

You might want to study some MIDI as well. Here's a document from the Roland corporation: The Basics of MIDI. On page 2 you can read this:
"One thing that is not sent across a MIDI cable is the actual audio signal for each device. This means that, even if all your MIDI connections are setup properly, you will not hear anything if the audio connections for each device are not properly connected."
(again, my bold)

There you go. Set this up properly with some audio cables connected and make some music. Now!
Make some music!

Sorry for the rant, but...

Who in his right mind makes a portrait oriented video for Youtube, when they're asking for an answer.

Watching this is like looking at your gear through a keyhole.

Is your Sub 37 AUDIO OUT connected to the Babyface at all?

You want a TS cable into the IN 3 at the side of the Babyface, make sure IN 3 is present and in TotalMix and set up as a line in, not "instrument".

Arm an audio track in Live, Audio From Ext In > 3, set monitor to Auto.

Now call up a pleasant patch on the synth and play a tune on the keys.

Can you hear it?

NOW you can take care of the midi connection. You want to decide on one port, either the Moog USB or the Babyface DIN.

In your video you were able to record midi, stick to the connection you've used there.

You want to set Audio To in the External Instrument to the (mono) input you're using on your Babyface, not 'It's usually 1/2'.
