Automating effect VST presets

Was wondering if there is a way to automate program changes for a vst effect. There are three presets in Audio Damage BigSeq 2 which sound good when I manually press the up/down arrows on my keyboard to select them. I've tried creating an effects rack with three instances of BigSeq 2 and automating the chain selector but for some reason one of the presets ends up playing on all 3 chains when selected, which is not ideal. Anyone got any advice? Thanks.
