Chain Selector Midpoint +3db boost in Live 9.7.3?
Chain Selector Midpoint +3db boost in Live 9.7.3?
I recently updated my DJ laptop it looks like Live 9.7.3 changed the Chain Selector curve? Not sure when this was implemented, but is there a way to revert back to the old curve?
When I created my set in Live 8 years ago, the midpoint of the chain selector crossfading between two chains kept the volume identical across the fade. In the latest Live 9 version there is now a +3db boost at the midpoint (value of 64 on the chain selector). Super problematic if you're using it as a wet/dry knob.
I try to keep my DJ setup as light and self-contained as possible and don't want to use Max, so any non-M4L solutions to this problem are much appreciated.

Hello,
You can right click or mac cmd click on the crossfader and select a curve.....

Sorry you did not ask for a crossfader curve....

np. unfortunately it doesn't seem to give you curve options. I'm on PC by the way.
What's perplexing is, why would they make this change in the first place? Why would anyone prefer their volume being boosted when crossfading in general?

But did you mean the crossfader?
If so you can rightclick it on PC and change the behaviour.
I'm on PC too and with Live 9.7.1

No, he didn't. He's talking about 18.5.4 Chain Select Zones in (e.g. effect-)racks, scroll down to the last image in that section, where they're describing "Crossfading Preset Banks Using Fade Ranges".miyaru wrote:But did you mean the crossfader?
I'm quite sure I've ever tried to use the chain selector that way in Live 9, but have never been completely happy with it for just this reason.RCUS wrote:When I created my set in Live 8 years ago, the midpoint of the chain selector crossfading between two chains kept the volume identical across the fade. exactly. This was changed at some point between Live 8 and the current version. I've tried creating a new rack with utility's mapped to another macro (one goes down -3db the other goes back up), but no success yet.chrk wrote:No, he didn't. have you asked the Abe's about this? maybe the change wasn't intentional?

yes I sent them a request, and i have a ticket open. not holding my breath for a reply though.fishmonkey wrote:have you asked the Abe's about this? maybe the change wasn't intentional?
the hard part is I'm not sure what version this change came in. I updated a machine that was running Ableton 8.x.x to Ableton 9.7.3 so it's impossible for me to pinpoint.
I did, however, manage a workaround that gets you within 0.05db of transparency.
1) Create two device chains
2) Map a macro to the device selector
3) Drag the chain fade all the way to one side for the first device, all the way to the other side for the second device so there's a "crossfade"
4) Drag the selector range for the chains, so that you're leaving space at the end of each for the full signal to go through at 0 or 127. So for example, one chain range will be 0-126, the other range will be 1-127. The end (or beginning) of each chain lets the signal pass through with no fade. At this point a value of 64 on your macro will yield +3db boost for any signal that passes through it, per my example above.
5) Map the same macro to the CHAIN VOLUMES of each chain.
6) With the macro mapping still selected, open up the mapping detail (top left corner). Set one chain to -6.033db minimum, 0db maximum. Set the other chain to the same and then invert the values.
7) Close the mapping.
You should now have 0db of gain at the center point value of 64, and the fade should be mostly linear/full power. A value of 32 or 104 on the macro will still yield a +0.05db boost, but that seems like the best I can do, and a pretty negligible amount if your intent is to use this as a live wet/dry knob.
