I'm not sure why it wouldn't, but if for a re-installation why not? As usual, make sure you got backups of everything externally.

Do you know if upgrading to High Sierra will improve the macOS speed and efficiency?
Or do we only get new features?

The default installation of High Sierra will convert your disk format to APFS instead of MacOS Journaled. If you're using an internal SSD, the difference in speed when copying files is HUGE. I can copy 2-3GB files in seconds, if not instantly.
