Finding tempo/bpm of midi clip

Post by TaoEntropy » Thu Sep 28, 2017 10:30 am

I frequently want to know this.

So I just played 2 bars of a melody I just came up with and recorded it into Ableton Live at the default 120 bpm tempo.

I always end up improvising, coming up with cool things, and I don't want to have to go back, set the bpm before I start recording, and then play into that. I can loose inspiration that way. I want to just play, record, and figure out how to make it loop later.

Is there some way to set the midi clip's start and end markers at the beginning and end of 1 bar of what I played (Live's 1 bar grid currently doesn't match up since it was played out of time with 120bpm) and have Ableton tell me what bpm this track is so that the bar will loop properly?

I've seen stuff like this done with audio loops and warping, but how can this be done with midi clips?

Thanks!!!

Thank you so much! This technique worked really well.

For anyone else who might want to try this, the "stretch notes" option was not available for some reason, but the "MIDI Stretch Markers" appeared anyway after note selection.

Love it.
