I'm very impressed with Ableton 10. Regarding the GUI, they managed to please both camps, which is sensible. I hated the old GUI, but quite like the new GUI.

Then there are the many improvements. And although I'm not usually interested in new plugins, Ableton 10 newbies look like they might actually be good.

One thing that bothers me is that some are saying it won't support 32bit plugins. I can't imagine people spending $50-$1,000 updating their plugins to 64bit.

i can't imagine there are companies selling 32 and 64 versions separately.

Often 64 bit is an upgrade or not available.

Maybe I'm wrong. I've only ever used 32 bit.

And isn't there a compatibility problem with Ableton 10? We won't be able to open old projects that have 32 bit plugins?

plugins in old projects are to be easily replaced with 64bit versions which are 100% available if they're not abandoned long ago.
nowadays even some phones dropped 32bit support, this should have happened even earlier to Live

A lot of installers include the 32-bit and 64-bit versions as well as AU and VST3 versions.

If you are anything like me, you may have already installed some if you were not paying attention. :)

Or if you happen to save your installers, you might be able to use those to acquire your 64-bit versions.

I opened a set a couple days ago with Live 10 in OSX, that I originally created in Live 9 on Windows. The original set was all VST plugins, and I only have the AU versions for many of those plugins installed on the Mac. With a few minor exceptions, everything just loaded.

I don't think Live 9 could do that, but it appears to be much improved with Live 10 - i remember doing some similar back when I first moved to the Mac, and most of my sets would crash Live when opening.

The few that don't work are ones where they've put (64-bit) in the name; most companies give you separate 32 and 64 bit installers, but the DLL has the same name, it just installs to a different place. Torpedo for instance installs both to the same place, one called Torpedo and the other called Torpedo (64 bit). Since I was using 64 bit, and there's no distinction on Mac, that one didn't load.

You may have a few instances like that; you also may be able to fix them by renaming the DLL (something I just thought of - will have to try that when I get home).

Extremely seldom is this the case. Certainly the first. Unless you mean you have extremely old plug-ins that are due for an update anyway.

Not without a bridge. I have a feeling 32lives is the best value on the Mac.

I don't know for my part I haven't tried it yet. But I don't know if it is because PUSH implementation, but I found 9 way slower and way less intuitive than live 8.

There were a lot of little bug, certainly due to PUSH implementation, that makes 9 an hassle to use at some point, especially in audio editing in arrangement view. And I found PUSH isn't for everyone to use. I mean most youtubers, use it 10% 20% max in their production time. Dont get me wrong, it is a good addition, but is it worth slowing down the whole live eco-system? Maybe for the future.

So anyway, if ableton is focused on making the workflow faster, rather than making gadgets, I'm quite happy with that. If you compare ableton to apple, for me they going the right direction. I used to love MacOS because it was fast and intuitive, but then after snow leopard, they added a lot mainstream gadget, and lost a lot in fast intuitive shortcut, and this to implement better sync with lOS device. And it's not getting better with time, they got more and more bugs, and the specialists (youtubers, not hardcore users)start to realise it and complaint about it, so is a blowback will come at one point?

Funny thing happened, a game called Rainbow6 Siege, stopped the production of contents to focus on repairing existing bugs, it took them 3 months to do so, meaning 6 months without contents, as it normally comes every trimester). They listened to their unhappy crowd, maybe some of the crowd wasn't happy to not get contents after the three months ( they must have not been the majority?), but in the long run, it is certainly better for the users.
Call of duty franchise can relate to that, I guess, as they carry on going futuristic, where some of users didn't want to, and COD trailer, succeeded to be the more disliked in history, passing front Justin Bieber. They will survive, but they did reacted way too late, cod is still the best seller franchise in the market, but they sell less and less every year (maybe just an economy factor also).

And my point, there, is , I think Ableton is doing the right thing to solve some existing issues, and bring back a faster workflow, because if a lot of people have migrated, in the past, from other DAW, to Ableton, it's because, Live FAST workflow, was the selling point.
For my part I got an old Mac early 2011 i5, and it's not powerful enough for big ableton projects, so workflow is my goal here, hopefully in the future they will be able to make DAW less cpu hungry, or people will have to move on tablets, to avoid an unaffordable computer. And it is certainly, going to happen anyway, with no doubts, as tablets get more and more powerful, with better processors.

And Ableton will have always time to add gadget later, like they did with simpler in 9.5, unfortunately with introduction of Push2 and a rather silly upgrade plan at the time, but anyway, the gadget included in live 10, I believe, should add a lot of flavour to work with.
I will be happy with them, but they aren't my priority, there isn't much appealing to me, in ableton 10, if not a faster workflow.

But honestly, I get your point of view, we all differents and work differently, but I think there is a lot of third party gadget out there you can buy, and some not too expensive, like Xfer Serum through splice for 10 bucks a month with their monthly plan, so keep believing in ableton, it takes time to make things happen, but at least they are listening to you, so at one point your wish will be granted, unlike Apple.

It's the only feature I am waiting for, will not buy update until they do this. Ableton is still best/only DAW to perform live with, but comping in other DAWs is so nice.
