ways of combining two PC's in studio

It looks like I might be able to get a very cheap PC from a housemate who's upgrading his.

AMD 1.3 ghz
256ram

I have a laptop
P4 2.4
512mb ram
40gig HDD
firewire audiophile sound card

and I use Live4, with vsti's, two external synths and a groovebox and every so often reason in rewire.

I really need more HDD space, so I was thinking of putting a one gigabit lan card in both machines and networking them with a 200gih 7200rpm HDD in the desktop. Do you think that would be fast enough to use for audio if it was in an older 1.3Ghz PC and accessed over a lan?

What else or what is the best way of using it? It'd be great if it could be used to take some of the vsti's I use of my laptops cpu. Can you rewire over lan?

You can't rewire over LAN, but fxteleport is as close as you can get.
I would actually start out by using it for rompler stuff that really taxes your harddrive. Using some of those vsti-synth racks for your computer would obviously save you loads of cpu cycles compared to using live as a host as well.

pluggin my own collectives stuff, but check out WormHole 2 from plasq.com

it's very low latency (auto detect on some hosts), easy to use, has mpoweful routing capabilities and is cross platform.
