Help with Chain Selectors in Ableton

Post by Fimey » Wed Nov 29, 2017 6:54 am

I'm pretty new to this so sorry in advance. But is there anyway to map a midi key to switch chain selectors only while on a specific chain? Like for example I would press this button to switch chains but then while another chain if I press it again it would only play the sound mapped to it. If you need any clarification, let me know! Thank you!

You can map a key range to the chain selector, it would be the closest thing to what you're trying to achieve. Press midi map, then press a key on your keyboard, hold it and press the last key you want to use. The key range between these two notes is now mapped to the chain selector.

Otherwise, the best way to do what you want would be using a drumrack. Each note is already mapped to a cell where you can drop whatever you want.

It sounds like you are trying to construct a patch switcher.
If you have access to M4L I made a patch switcher which takes Midi program change commands from an external source (keyboard or wherever) and uses that to change the chain selector.
That allows your keys to play the notes of the chain which has been selected by the patch change.
like this

If that's what you want then say so and I'll paste it in this post.

@Angstrom, I'd like this. I work with changing Chains all the time. This could help.
MacBook Pro (MacOS 10.14.x) Surface Pro (Win 10)
(STUDIO I/O) MOTU UltraLite mk4 (w/ADA8200), (LIVE I/O) Behringer X Air XR18
Ableton Live Suite 10, Reason 10, Studio One 4

OK, it's a bit scrappy because its for my own use in a narrow use case scenario.
Well, here you go, I assume you know how to get this text into max4live.

"INSTALL"
copy the text from the code block below.
In Live make a new Max Midi effect, edit it, and delete the contents
Right click in Max and "paste", go to presentation view and put the new elements which have appeared all up in the top corner (if it isnt)
ctrl + shift + I to open the inspector and choose "open in presentation"
Save and close max editor
look at the max device, if it doesnt look right, open Max editor and save and close it again. Sometimes that works.
save the patch changer as an Ableton device with the little floppy disk icon!

USAGE:
put this device immediately before an Instrument rack.
In the instrument rack have all your instrument chains arranged in the sequence you would like.
The patch changer should now be displaying the correct name of your instrument rack in the "Selected Rack" bar, see in my earlier image for an example. If it isnt then hit "update" (I've not set the watchers to observe instantiating racks)
Arm the track,
Fiddle with a keyboard controler, send some program change info, you should see that little integer box display the number
If you are lucky you'll see the chain selector moving about
If you are really lucky you will now be flipping presets

Code: Select all

I'll check out the path switcher in the future. In the meantime, I guess I'll have to work with the key range. Thank you all for your help!
