Thanks for the tip Olo, I'll try to reset Live as well, but changing the buffer didn't helped, as default my buffer size is about 512 samples and I'm used to work at 1024 samples on 44,1KHz without any crackles on live 9, I tried all the buffers and the audio crackles again...
I heard about some compatibility problems with Focusrite, Ableton and OSX, and I'm running on a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 mkII, is that possible ?

Strange, that a higher Buffersize will not work for you :(
I use the Focusrite 1820 2Gen. and i don't have any problems with this Interface.
Sometimes i think that these problems hasn't something to do with Live, because the main engine did not change so much.
I have big problems last year with my old Mac Mini late 2012 i7 OS X 10.8.5 16 GB Ram 2,3 GHz quad and Live 9.x it was unusable to work with this config. at a specific time. The result was to buy a new Mac and the Focusrite 1820. Thanks to M-Audio for the great Driver Support so i can trash my full working Fast Track Ultra 8 r. No more M-Audio or Avid stuff for me. ;)
The strange thing is, when i use only the Ableton plugins it works well, when i use VST i run into trouble. ( MacMini )
I think Steinberg did some major changes within the VST SDK, they are pushing more VST3 and this ist not supported by Ableton.
Ok, that's just a thought, not a conspiracy theory ;) :D
I hope you find a way to fix it

I have the same problem on OS X (10.11.6) (dual Quad-core 2.8ghz/24gigram/ssd) ( latest Roland Studio Capture drivers).
Same project open in live 9 and live 10 (32 tracks half audio/midi)
Live 10 introduces crackling during playback and i have NO VSTI turned on and NO audio VST and NOTHING on the Master.
I have 22-24% CPU and I have crackling during playback.
SAME project in live 9 has NO CRACKLING during playback.

ll projects at 24bit and Ableton at 44.1 Htz
Both Projects are 32 sample buffer size and no other project was EVER a problem for live9. But every project loaded into Live 10 has this.
While you guys might suggest, use higher buffer size... I can't.
I need sample accurate recording and have to use the smallest buffer size possible so its all in sync.

BUT check this out.. i DELETED EVERY TRACK except 1 Audio track with a 808 kick on it and NO PLUGINS AT ALL in the project.
And it still CRACKLES during playback! WTF Ableton!

All versions of Live 9 never had this problem

Wow,
32 samples buffer size this is really low, i can't use this small amount with my Mac.
64 samples is the minimum on my system, better 128 samples.
You can do your sync stuff maybe with the track delay and increase your buffer, this works fine for me.
Ok, that may not be an elegant solution, but it works, and btw software developers like Cycling74 do not recommend using 32 samples because the their software MAX/MSP slows down.
greetz...

hmm.. maybe all these issues we have are because of Max for Live being "inside" of Ableton now? supposed to faster but maybe something is not optimized, causing these crackles we never had in any live 9.

-------------------------------------------------------
FYI:
on OSX: Roland Studio Capture or an Roland Capture audio interfaces have some of the lowest latency and most stable drivers I have ever used.
18 In/10outputs, excellent clean sound quality and USB2.
32 buffer size with 4.85ms Input and 2.54ms Output latency = overall latency of 7.39ms at 44.1khz.
32 buffer size with 4.54ms Input and 2.42ms Output latency = overall latency of 6.96ms at 48 khz.
32 buffer size with 2.83ms Input and 1.72ms Output latency = overall latency of 4.55ms at 96khz.

I had the same crackling problem on my windows laptop (i7-8550u, 16GB ram) running with an Arturia Audiofuse. It seemed that any CPU usage over 50% was causing the issue. I downloaded and installed ASIO4ALL v2 and set that as my audio interface, then enabled my Audiofuse through ASIO4ALL and it works, drops the CPU below 30%. Would recommend a try.

same problem,
I fixed it once by disabling the on-board audio in my bios.

now I have kind of the same crackling problem again, and i think it's
somehow related to my new video card (rtx 2060 super)
switched back to my old geforce gtx 970 and the crackling seems to be gone.

I also never noticed this before:
my GPU seems to have an awful lot of work with ableton 10 (60% load on gtx 970 and around 40% on the RTX 2060 super)

If your on Windows systems, it is best to recheck all power management, CPU usage states etc, as some Windows updates have reset those to original defaults.

The same here. AMD Ryzen 5 3600/32 GB RAM/5700XT / Presonus Audiobox96. The problem is somehow connected to the graphics card driver - without driver (with windows 10 standard driver) Live 10 works. The funny thing is that only Live is affected - Studio One, Bitwig, Reason, Cakewalk work quite normally
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 / Gigabyte Aorus Elite x570 / 32 GB RAM / AMD Radeon 5700XT / Windows 10
Arturia MiniLab MK2, KeyLab MK2 / Presonus Atom / Presonus Audiobox USB96
Live 10 / Studio One Pro / Cakewalk / Reason 11 Intro / Bitwig 8-Track

Having same problem on both my PC and my laptop. The crackles aren't there when I record, and even when I play back at first. After a few times, they'll sneak in there. I've disabled all plugins and frozen all other tracks, and reduced CPU but no change. I may try to make a video because it's infuriating.

I'm on day 60 of my 90 day trial and if this doesn't get sorted Ableton is a hard no for me.

I've literally tried everything that's been suggested In these responses. It does kinda sound like a digital clock error or something but I'll have to look deeper into it tomorrow.

I am having this problem on my desktop in Ableton with a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6. I've tried every sample rate with the buffer size from the minimum up to 1024 with the Focusrite USB drivers and up to 2048 with the ASIU4ALL v2 driver. I've uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers. No luck. It doesn't matter if I'm using third-party VSTs, built in instruments, samples, etc. I get crackling when playing anything through the interface, including a project with only a single flattened audio track.

Also, I do not get any crackling when Ableton goes out to my cheap desktop speakers through the on-board audio interface and no conflicts are indicated in the device manager. I'm on Windows 10 v1909 with the latest service packs installed. My system is an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz CPU, 64 GB GDDR4 3200 AMD optimized memory and a Radeon RX 5700 8 GB GDDR6 PCIe 4.0 GPU on an X570 motherboard. I have the OS on a 500 GB SSD, a dedicated 1 TB M.2 NVMe drive for scratch disk space, and multi HDD internal drives for storage, so the system is certainly fast enough. I'm running into this on a fresh boot of the system and my both CPU usage and latency are generally low. I don't have this problem in Maschine, other DAWs or in any other program on my system. If I cannot find a workable solution, I will have to look at using a different DAW when my Ableton 10 Studio trial ends, rather than upgrade from Live Lite as planned. This constant crackling just isn't tolerable.

Ensure the focusrite is on own USB port not in a hub. They are picky using USB ports.

Thank you for the suggestion! The Focusrite is plugged directly into the back of my system. With that thought in mind, I did try moving it around to other ports and even tried swapping the USB cable, but no luck. The cracking in Ableton continues. Any other ideas? I'm stumped here.

You are using the correct drivers for it? Remember there have been 3 generations of scarlett interfaces and the drivers are different for them all.
