[Live 10] Any Freeze Ups / Crashes on MacOS?

Post by EnjoyRC » Mon Feb 26, 2018 12:26 pm

I've been running 10.0.1 and the beta's released since then. I'm experiencing complete freeze ups with the spinning beach ball. Need to Force Kill the process. This happens one or twice in a 4 hour working session. Find myself saving every 5 minutes or so while programming songs.

I have used Ableton Live nearly every day since v2. Around 13 years or so. I've never experienced an Ableton Live crash till v10.

Any one else?

Any ideas?

One of my friends recently had big issues with Live due to loading a timemachine backup onto a new MB from his old Mac, is was only Live that was giving him trouble.

Don't suppose you did anything like that recently?

it sounds like you're running out of RAM... or your OS is using it all.

have you looked at Activity Monitor to get a sense of your CPU and RAM consumption?

are you running Live in 32 bit or 64 bit? and how much RAM do you have?

Your response does make me curious if TimeMachine is kicking off. If it's doing this. I've had TimeMachine running for a long time. Didn't think it'd be a problem. I'm going to try an evening without it "Automatically" backing up.

As I'm typing this, the Live GUI is frozen. Beach Ball. Time Machine has been disabled all afternoon. The song is still playing, just cannot interact with the GUI. Very odd.

Currently CPU = 17% . Memory 3.5 GB used .

Force Quit... Reloaded Set.

Watching Activity Monitor...

Went to reorder Scenes, Started to drag scene down..GUI froze. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Is it possible for a faulty audio interface (MOTU MicroBook II), or faulty USB cable connecting the audio interface to be the cause of GUI lockups?
Because when performing live connected to my Behringer X Air XR18, with a completely different heavier USB cable, all is good for hours.

i've had my Apogee Duet lock up on me before. never while using it though. it's USB so if the computer is on, it's on. i often do not reboot the Mac for weeks or months. usually just disconnecting the interface and reconnecting it fixes any issues; still, i usually reboot the computer too during this process so that i do not have to change any settings that might have failed over to an available option (since the Duet was not available). i think it's the wake/sleep function of the OS that causes this.

so where i was going with the story was... have you "rebooted" (completely powered down) the interface in a while?
this might take unplugging the USB cable to complete properly.

I power down nightly. Yet, you do give me an idea. Next time it locks up, I'll unplug the interface and see what happens.

Just out of curiosity, how does Live perform using the internal sound card?

Not bad. A bit higher CPU usage, and much higher latency.

I guess the question was "does it hangs when you're using the internal sound car?"

It has never locked up while using only Built In Core Audio. I don't do that much. It's worth a test.

I've had periods of crashes in Live 9. Typically due to certain plug-ins, a few times bugs, and sometimes necessitating re-installations of everything. Maybe needed that three times in five years.

So far Live 10 (Standard) is rock solid in macOS 10.12.6.
