Several Ableton Live questions from a Cubase guy

Post by soundpalace » Thu Mar 08, 2018 3:34 am

Hey there guys, hope you're all doing great.

I'm currently on the 3rd day of my Ableton Live 10 Suite demo and really lovin it.

I have several questions that I was hoping you could possibly help me with:

* When using VST plugins, is there a way to save a certain "preset" as a default preset? Some plugins offer this natively but not all do, and in Cubase there was an option available across all plugins where the current plugin preset could be set as default. From that point onwards, any new instances of the plugin would default to the preset set. Just to clarify, "Save as Default Configuration" seems to be mostly about saving the "Device Parameters" which you configure using the "Configure" button, not about saving the current "preset" as the default. Hope I'm missing something here.

* When using VST plugins, is there any way to save my plugin presets into the User Library? Currently, the Load and Save buttons on the plugin device are simply asking me to save or load files from folders on my hard disk. I'm wondering if there's a central place where I can store all presets and then browse them using my User Library instead? Cubase does this with MediaBay and it was a handy way to store my presets in one central place where I could browse them. The only method I have found so far is embedding the plugin in an Instrument Rack and saving that preset, but that seems a bit convoluted and thus, I'm hoping there's a nicer way.

* Is there a way to select multiple MIDI clips and destructively transpose them? Currently it seems that this is not possible, and thus if you were transposing multiple tracks, they would have to be done one at a time.

* Apart from Cmd+Option+P, is there a universal way to simply hide the current plugin window? On some plugins, the Esc key works while on others it doesn't.

Thanks so much!

Hi there,

as a former Cubendo user I now that things work a little different with LIVE, but IMHO easier.

User-library: Go to settings - library and define the place on your hard disc/pc/mac of your user library, where your own presets will be saved/located.
Create an INSTRUMENT RACK as default VST-preset of lets say NI Absynth this way: drag from Lives browser an empty INSTRUMENT RACK on an empty midi track.
Drag your VST Plug-In into this Instrument Rack. Choose your preset and save it located in your USER-LIBRARY.
Load this INSTRUMENT RACK if you want to start with your favourite preset.
You might use the 8 macro controllers on the left of the INSTRUMENT RACK and configure them with offered
VST parameters on the right (click on the little arrow in the VST-instrument.

Media-Bay vs. Lives' browser/places:

All files and folders I need are located on several hard discs on my PC.
I have access to those folders in PLACES, left down within the BROWSER.

Have fun & cheers!

Thanks so much for the reply! Sweet, it's good to know I wasn't missing anything. I'll go with the Instrument rack approach for my plugin presets and see how I go.

Really appreciate your time and help :)
