Falsetto vocal mics/mixing

Post by jonahmo » Fri Apr 13, 2018 10:45 pm

Hi. I'm trying to figure out the best way that I can record and mix falsetto vocals (rap) for optimum audibility. I recorded an album a couple years ago, and I found it pretty difficult to make the vocals sit right in the mix and still be audible, especially when the rapping is fast. Here's an example of the music I'm talking about - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvWD7xT0Alk

First I'm wondering if there's a certain mic or type of mic that would be better for recording - I think I was just using a Shure SM57 or something before but I'm looking to get a new mic for under $300 - used would be okay. I'd like it to be an all-purpose vocal mic, preferably something I can take on the road with me (since my SM57 is lost).

For mixing I'll obviously aim for proper EQ'ing, arrangements that aren't fighting too much with the vocal frequencies, and a little side-chain compression. I don't know if there might be any other tips.
