Transform Gain boost into Gain attenuation in a rack

Post by Exie » Fri May 25, 2018 11:29 am

I want to negate Gain parameter. 11.3db boost has to be transformed into 11.3db attenuation, but parameter value should stay the same, +11.3db. 11.3 is random number that can be anything else.

This is simple arithmetic operation. Usual rack tricks like phase inversion won't work because of math behind decibels but I still hope there are some options I didn't consider.

The goal is to make +11.3db parameter value to result in attenuation and be the equivalent of -11.3db Gain. The reason why it's important is that mapping to different parameter ranges results in generic 0-127 parameter appearance in rack macro, while I would prefer a value in decibels:

Is this possible without Max4Live? I would appreciate any ideas.

Put each Utility in its own rack.
Map each Gain to a rack macro.
Map those 2 macros to your parent rack.
Voilà!

Wow, I was sure that this will propagate 0-127 everywhere, but it works. Feels more like a bug, but certainly a great feature. Glad it was that simple, thanks for your help.

I wasn't aware of this either before you've asked. I simply tried and was lucky :-)
