Where's Dolby Atmos for Live?

Post by bank-manager » Sat Sep 29, 2018 8:12 am

There was a workshop at Loop 2017:
https://loop.ableton.com/2017/program/a ... y-atmos-i/

There's a Youtube Video showing some DnB in Atmos with Live
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otcu7TsisFk

However I struggle to find any real information. The official Dolby Atmos VST Plugin is hard to come by and I only seem to find a Protools bundle (I don't want the ProTools bundle).

Official website also talks only about ProTools
https://www.dolby.com/us/en/professiona ... atmos.html

They have however other packages that are just as confusing and make no sense, content- and price wise
http://www.rspeaudio.com/
https://www.rspeaudio.com/Dolby-Atmos-M ... -suite.htm

Especially there's a part of that $1000 suite (resp. $10.000 including some never-heard-of hardware interface) that is said to be "Windows PC only" and other parts say "3 Mac Versions included" - what is that? I get a $1000 Atmos Mastering Suite and have to run one part of the software on Windows PC and the other part on Mac?

EDIT: Also check out the tech specs, funny as hell. Dolby Atmos but only supports up to 48Khz audio. Wasn't the whole thing also about high-res audio? Albeit Dolby True-HD or whatnot they called it - I still find that really weird. How are even consumers supposed to understand that?
Technical Specs

Dolby Atmos Production Suite and Panner Plug-ins:
Compatibility
• Pro Tools 12.x
OS Compatibility
• OS X 10.12 or 10.11
Minimum System Requirements
• Computer: i5
• Disk Space (in MB): 200
• Memory: 16GB
Sample Rate Support
• 48kHz
Dolby Atmos HT-RMU Software:
Please contact RSPE for hardware and software requirements

Cakewalk Sonar (RIP) had already up to 7.1 Surround mixing included. I was hoping Live would jump the train and give us at least a purchasable option - I'm into video production a bit with my Studio and offering Atmos Mixing would definitely give me an advantage.

I never understood these company policies - they spent millions to develop that stuff and then block out pretty much any interested 3rd party creators by not supplying information and suitable products.

Can anyone give me more info on how I can mix into Atmos with Live? I couldn't yet even find out what file format I would have to mixdown..

Maybe Live's "Surround Panner" device would be helpful - https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/surround-panner/

Out of luck if your looking for a simple VST and encoder. After diving into the subject (because who wouldn't want to create some automated sound objects in their live sets that could be used in any venue that has a DTS:X or Atmos setup) I realized it is quite a substantial investment, not to mention "Using the MDA infrastructure" as they call it is not OSS (open source software) but seems to require Dolby software to encode which is only available through hardware??? I'm not sure the dolby guy's adopted the MIDI or DMX standards but it seems they have a way to go before we can implement sound object encoding in our mixes through a simple vst plugin and no the Max surround-panner is not going to help you create a "sound object" mixdown. I'm going to keep my eyes open because I think the concept of moving sound through space is a very cool concept however it needs to fit into the typical DAW workflow if we are going to be able to create content. I'm hoping some expert might comment with better clarification as to what is required to make this functionality available in a VST3 format plugin. I found some stuff like ( https://vintageking.com/blog/2018/12/dolby-atmos/ ) that but they don't even touch on the topic of DTS:X and it's unlimited sound object feature. This question may be ahead of the times ;)

No - and its hard to believe there isnt an easy straight answer out there in a google search,

No -
Ableton Live 11 does not render to BWF files directly. Currently the only DAWs with the built in Render capability are the latest versions of Pro-tools, Cubase, Nuendo and now Presonus Studio pro. Audio Definition Model (ADM) files are a type of audio file that contain metadata about the audio objects and channels in a mix. ADM files are saved in the Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) . If you wanted to render to Atmos but not get stuck with only (built in renderer) of these DAWs then you will need to visit the Dolby site and buy the plugin for either the Dolby Atmos Renderer or Fiedler Audio's The Dolby Atmos Composer.

Ableton live saves (Export) natively to WAV,AIFF and FLAC not ADM or BWF. BWF are the BED files needed for the Person or Customer that needs to provide their Atmos ready file to whomever needs it. Please update or correct me If I am wrong. Hope this helps!

If searching the Ableton Live 11 Help manual the keyword "Atmos" returns nothing.

Maybe not specifically ATMOS, but it is multi channel supporting multi channel plugins.
