Yamaha Modx and Ableton?

I just bought one, it comes in today and wanted to know if anyone has experienced how well it works with Ableton? I just basically would like to record the tracks and effects via audio or midi but also be able to use it the same time as a midi controller and trigger other tracks in Ableton, also does recording through the usb give the same quality as if recording one by one through stereo tracks and your interface?

You can set the Modx into Mackie Control mode, do the same with Ableton. In Ableton use mackie control classic in preferences - link/midi.
I used to do it with the Motif ES...

Good luck!

Actually, Yamaha has left the DAW remote control feature out of MODX.

The audio and MIDI interfacing still works, just no transport or mixer control like the Motif series had.

Audio quality is potentially better than using an outboard interface because it stays in the digital domain, no conversion into analog and then back to digital is required.

Did you try this way of setting up with mackie control classic enabled in Live's preferences?
Doghouse might be right that the remote control is taken away from the modx...

good luck, bastian

Thanks for that guys, i’ve been really busy lately and the modx is for someone that I know and helping them with their setup, they really wanted something to also be able to use live

I did try looking for the Mackie control in preferences but didn’t see it so I just started chopping doing everything I possibly could, got fairly close with the external instrument and usb set up properly but could not route the individual channels properly, even contacted a so called slecialist at Yamaha and he was no help..

The article you mentioned, Red, I started reading when I first picked it up but got distracted with the cubase aspect and left it alone but I think it might be the answer setting the multi gm preset in int, thanks I’m gonna try it when I get over there later

I was getting ready to return it and get a Kronos which I still might do as not too impressed with the modx but I might just get that for myself and leave the modx where it is

Does the Kronos offer DAW remote control?

I think it comes with comprehensive software and extremely friendly, as far as I know, maybe I’m wrong, was planning on looking into it today, that thing blows the montage out the water at the same price point and has an on board sampler, huge sticking point. I feel like the modx doesn’t make me feel warm and gitty sound wise, still good but I think the Kronos although more expensive would add that element

Plus the whole on board sequencer to put together raw ideas makes the montage/modx version sad

I’m definitely going to look into how capable the Kronos is in Ableton, I know montage just added a daw button update

The Kronos audio interface doesn't work properly when monitoring the DAW while recording from the Kronos.

This is the problem: the USB audio send is the full stereo output of the Kronos. That includes any audio coming from the DAW over USB, requiring muting the DAW output when recording the Kronos audio into the DAW. Obviously that doesn't work too well

For some reason, Korg has never fixed this even though they are into the third generation of the Kronos.

Thanks for the heads up doghouse, so having the Kronos set as the audio interface input, and let’s say my Apollo output, I could not route and monitor midi tracks from Kronos while also working on other plug-ins and tracks within Ableton?, the way I would plan on recording the audio from the routed midi tracks would just be individually sending the audio to a audio track from the midi track, sorry if I sound confused

Basically if I can route all those tracks from the Kronos to their own midi tracks and still work on everything else in Ableton as if I had my Normal midi controller set up I should be good, is this not the case?
