Combining uncompressed mono/stereo samples

Post by matthewnovachis » Tue Nov 13, 2018 1:02 am

In section 5.2 of the manual (Sample Files) it talks about Live how Live can "combine uncompressed mono or stereo samples of any length, sample rate or bit depth without prior conversion." Does anyone know what this means or where I can find information on how to figure it out?
Thank you!
Matt

It just means that Live will accept any file type for playback.

yep, it just means that Live will do audio conversions on the fly if necessary.

if preserving the integrity of your audio signals is of prime importance, then doing sample rate conversions with a high-quality offline audio utility is a good idea.

Live already uses internally the best high-quality sample rate conversion utility available (SoX).

Since Live 9.2. Even before that it was already better than most other tools.

The only thing that is better than Live's conversion is no conversion at all, running the project at the same sample rate as the files.

The SoX conversion is only used when downsampling actually, otherwise it's the same old conversion Live has always used. In the audio fact sheet in the manual even Ableton recommend using an offline tool for SRC if you're super worried about audio quality and need to upsample.

From what I read upsampling works the same in all tools and DAWs (with same quality), it is downsampling where the audible artifacts and differences between algorithms shows up, which would explain why Live only uses SoX when downsampling.
