Ableton factory instruments out of tune

Post by Peazy » Tue Nov 13, 2018 5:47 am

Looking for some advice for a reoccurring problem. A lot of instruments sound pitchy and when I drop the Ableton tuner on a track to check, sure enough it's sharp by about +17cents. Sometimes the note starts off sharp and drifts into tune after a second, but others just stay sharp. This is the case for some instruments included with Ableton, for example the synth named "Stevie Wow" is +17.9cents sharp. Any explanation for this would be much appreciated, as it really renders Ableton useless.

Some sound designers just go crazy...

Most common is bass patches that play WAY lower than the actual MIDI key.

Pads are also usually bonkers.

Detuning is a common technique.

"Chord patches", patches made to sound like chords.

Also, filters and FX may change the timbre.

In that "Stevie Wow" preset, it has a setting called "Inharm" set to 50% that causes most of the "drift", and also a Frequency Shifter.

The theoretical model of a resonating string is harmonic, meaning that the string’s partials are all exact multiples of the fundamental frequency. Real-world strings, however, are all more or less inharmonic, and this increases with the width of the string. The Inharm slider models this behavior, causing upper partials to become increasingly out of tune as its value increases.

Most of that out of tune is intentional, in electronic music it is very common to modulate pitch, or set one oscillator slightly detuned.

But it also can be dialed back, look for parameters controlling tuning, or modulations for pitch.
