Working on my Mixing Skills
Working on my Mixing Skills
Hi,
I have been working on my mixing skills by forcing myself to make deep sub bass music. UAD's little voice of god is definitely helpful. Here's a video of me doing it..

Yeah sounds like you need some work. Watch the gain staging.

Gain staging on which part? I have a flat L3 maximizer on my master that keeps it from peaking over. Is there a specific parts that sounds too loud?

You are going into the red on your channel stripAst3rix wrote:Gain staging on which part? I have a flat L3 maximizer on my master that keeps it from peaking over. Is there a specific parts that sounds too loud?
You should not be going over 0dBFS anywhere in your project.
Also, just to add my 2 cents... the Focal Alpha 80s you have are very well balanced speakers with very clear mid range. If they are giving you too much bass (as you mention in the video), then there is probably something wrong with their placement and/or your mixing environment. Which then, in turn, will make you struggle to get good mixing results. Hearing things as transparently as possible through your speakers is the most important thing in mixing, and needs to be corrected first if you really want to get anywhere with your mixes - as any decision you make with your software/plugins will be skewed by faults in what you hear vs what is really happening in your project.

This doesnt stop you going in the red from plug in to plug in.Ast3rix wrote:Gain staging on which part? I have a flat L3 maximizer on my master that keeps it from peaking over. Is there a specific parts that sounds too loud?

All that plug-in mainly is, is a High Pass filter with a resonance boost at the cutoff. Should be doable with any decent eq where the resonance peaks when you adjust the Q on a highpass filter (Not all EQs behave this way, can't remember if Ableton's does or not, I believe it does).
So it essentially just emphasizes the main fundamental of the bass and cuts out the subsonic rumble.

For mixing, Live's basic effects are what I would recommend as a starter for everything and every track should have an EQ8 on it especially as it has M/S eq-ing which is very useful for anything with low frequencies like subs and a mix of low/highs. EQ8 and the compressors are pretty damn good and the built in spectrums help to no end and keep everything pretty simple. After that it's either experimentation or a specific need/sound that you would want. Reverb would be my only exception to this with Live.
Not sure if it was an instructional video or just video notes on what you are doing, but have a watch through your own videos and listen out for the word "Umm". Having been a product trainer for years and having to take public speaking tutorial I suffered subconsciously from the same thing and only after I listened back after a recorded session did I realise how much I said it and how annoying it sounded when I noticed it (which is what people were listening too). Hopefully that comment was received as helpful and not as a criticism.
