Is there a basic intro video or basic manual

Post by Henry Robinett » Fri Mar 01, 2019 10:32 pm

So this is going to be a terrible post. Long time Live owner. Never got it underway. But about 10 years ago I did a gig where I used about 7 tunes with Live in conjunction with my band. A few things made it complicated.
1. Not really having a working band where we could rehearse once or twice a week so we could dial in using Live.
2. Writing songs that had a lot of time signature changes before Live accepted time signature changes. This made it really hard, having to create tricks and work arounds.

So now I have a working band that rehearses at LEAST once a week. I have a bunch of somewhat complicated music with time signature changes. I understand Live can do this now. I have those old files and about 5 others I want to put together for my band to play to/against. But in the mean time I've forgotten what I knew about scenes and clips. I thought there'd be some videos about basic set up or using clips or time signatures or setting repeats for scenes. But I haven't seen what I'm looking for and the online manual is just too big for me to print. Live is such a big sprawling program that addresses so many things, it's hard to find where you fit in the manual. Is there a basic video for starting, or clips - not midi. Or a BASIC manual, or section of it for covering the basics in easy bite-sized chunks? I just don't have the time to spend a couple of weeks with my nose in a manual. All the videos I've seen all say NEW and seemed designed for 10, which is what I have. Where is the archive of these videos?

I'm pulling up these old files. I'd like to get one or two up for Monday's rehearsal. But typically these go from 3/4 to 2/4 to 7/8, but I did them all in 4/4 or 1/4. I'd like to go back and correct this. I need to figure out how to set the scene repeats, get the session view to launch the clips when they're supposed to be launched. Now they just repeat or something. I don't remember how to set them up. LOL. This seems so daunting. So complicated. Man. Thanks. I hope someone can throw me a bone or give me some tips.
All the best,

Kinda broad topic.

Follow Actions (and Launch Modes) control Clips stopping and starting other Clips (instead of just looping/playing once)
https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/launching-clips/

Right-click a Scene, in the context menu there are Scene launch options like "Edit Launch Tempo" and "Edit Launch Time Signature"

Tell me about it. Very broad topic. Very broad questions. Thank you. I'll check those out. I've remembered about launch and follow actions, thank god.

Ableton’s basic starter videos - https://www.ableton.com/en/live/learn-live/

Live, like all DAWs, is complicated software and has a fairly steep initial learning curve - in some ways it’s one of the most complex DAWs. So yes, it takes some time to learn how to use it. If your band isn’t used to playing against something that keeps time rigidly and won’t change the tempo if the musicians’ timing drifts then the band is in for a learning curve as well.

We're used to playing with click tracks. A lot of studio work. But I thought one of the great features with Live was the ability to play to your tempo. Warp.
