I'm starting to love the Ableton compressor (the standard one)
I have just started doing more vocal tracking sessions in Ableton where I'm forcing myself to only use stock plugins (to save CPU use and maximize stability during paid sessions), and I'm finding after tweaking the Ableton compressor can be dialed in very well.
I'm often getting to the mixing stage trying to slap a 3rd party compressor going back to the stock because it isn't sounding as good.
I guess I'm starting to see the benefits of surgical compression. I can get it to sound very smooth by increasing the knee and tweaking the release. It can take a bit longer to dial in but once you have it, I actually like it better than some colored compressor where you have less control.

Good to hear!
I rarely use any 3rd party plugins. I get way more stability, it's more cpu friendly, and it limits my choices (well, that's only half try because of M4L)... and I can open an old Live 5 .als finger in the nose.
Live's devices are really good for the most part and some of them are better than many pretty looking vsts (e.g EQ8 is a very powerful eq). If you need color use Saturator. If you want less surgical compression use Glue Compressor. Operator is a beast. Utility is the most handy device ever. Echo sounds marvelous. Vinyl Distortion's saturation is unique... and the list goes on.
I really wish for an updated Reverb, but still I use it all the time. It's actually quite good for small rooms/ambiances and you can go nuts with it if you need fx types of reverbs. And then you have Convolution Reverb if you need more choice.

Agree - I really love a lot of the Ableton Suite effects - EQ8 and the compressor especially.
I use the standard compressor for all of my client's spoken word stuff - I just find it super-fast and flexible. Plus, I can sidechain it to a background music track super-easily.

Those badboys get the job done.
And it's good that Compressor has both Peak and RMS modes, so it's suitable for many applications.
Also, afaik Glue Comp is a component-level-modeling clone of an SSL comp.

I use the following plugins all the time in Live:
Eq8
Compressor
Glue
Delay
Echo
Drum Bus
Gate
Limiter
& Multiband Dynamics
I have 3rd party options that I can use, but usually, I'll start with these while working in Live.
