Collect and Save Question

Post by 808byte » Wed Apr 10, 2019 12:32 am

So, this is something I routinely do since forever, 'collect and save'.... but the thought came to mind and I'm curious now.

Basically, I collect and save my project the first time and do the same for all other sessions(edit work) after...

Is it possible to just SAVE simply after the first session ? or do I need to keep collecting and saving for following ? Its funny that I never bothered to look into this since it always works out , why change it right.

I ask because sometimes I lose a sample or something without any changes to moving folders/samples....

Just curious.

I must emphasize I am only doing edits in this case and not adding new vsts or something. Just saying I had some issues doing is all.

Additionally, I must say it it important for the new comers to ableton live to know that 'save and collect 'will save your work from a head bang!

also, from the manual:

"If you are using this process to transfer a single Live Set to another computer, it is important to first "Save Live Set As..." to a new folder (not into an existing project folder). Otherwise the process will not work properly."

another thing to consider.

one more thing that I will mention here to get feedback on is that when we "save" anything- we have to look below to a small level of text of this is "is saving.."

Anyone agree that this needs to be more in you face? ?something better?

If you add new external files to your project then you need to collect them indeed as your sets iterations are saved. If you lose content it's because you've moved something, there's no other way.
File management in Live (or any DAW or software that deals with tons of medias from everywhere) is something easily overlooked but it is KEY. This files are THE content. It's quite a deep topic but I'm sure there's some good ressources about this on the web and you should definitely take some time to understand exactly where are and go your files.

An option for some projects to automatically collect when saving sets would be awesome.

You can simply add a shortcut in osx system preferences for "collect and save"...
e.g I use shift-alt-cmd-S so it makes sense within the already existing saving shortcuts, but you can overwrite cmd-S if you want.

Thanks, yeah, the automatic 'collect and save' if it appeared more visibly functioned would make more sense. The 'collect into project' in mange files then collect and save way down at the bottom just seems redundant to "me". Collecting two times in name.. Kinda blurry I dunno. Sure there is a reason. Maybe I am still missing something....

I will admit my problem is losing track of my saving sessions sometimes if the program is open and I fall asleep.. more discipline.
