How big are your Live 10 Backups?

Post by Angstrom » Wed Jun 19, 2019 7:36 pm

Because of the way I work and save iteratively I baffle Ableton's backup system. It makes 10 backups per song. But because I save iteratively as I make changes that means if I save 10 versions of a song there are 10 backups for each, and they never get deleted, not ever.

So, how many backups do you have?
I've got 671 orphaned backups
They take up 2.3 gigabytes of space !!

To be clear how I save, if I make a song called mysong, as I make changes to it to be safe I save as mysong-001.als, mysong-002.als, mysong-003.als,
then if I do a dub version, or an alternate arrangement that forks like
myproject/mysong-003_dubversion001.als
myproject/mysong-003_dubversion002.als

etc

Yeah, I regularly delete backups for this reason.
I don't know why .als can be large as they are.

I save projects in the same way. Each time I open and start adding or changing things I progressively save just adding a number on the end as it's a habit I got into many years ago after a few projects got corrupted in a different program when the software would sometimes crash during a save.

I'm not at all fussed by a few extra backups, most programming software I use makes its own incremental backups in the background too. It's simple to delete unneeded backups but impossible to recover from no backups. Once a project is completed, simply delete the backup folder if it is unneeded.

Once a project is completed, simply ...

I am unfamiliar with this concept.

I have a 5tb drive full of projects. This includes not just the Ableton files but also the samples and even artwork/video I create for releases. I'm in no way a professional so gawd knows how big their back ups must be. When I die someone will see these HDDs and assume its all porn
