MIDI controller can't trigger full sample (note on/off issue)

Post by tomlebeau » Sun Aug 25, 2019 3:40 pm

I'm using a Roland Alpha Juno-2 as my main controller. When trying to play samples in Ableton Live's Simpler/Sampler instruments, I can't trigger full samples (even in one-shot mode). I have to hold the key down in order to play the full sample. It's as if the keyboard is acting solely as a gate.

I tested out my Prophet 6 and there were no issues. Playing a key on the P6 triggers a sample in Live and the entire sample plays back. I can't figure out why it's not possible from the Alpha Juno-2. Additionally, I tested both the Juno-2 and P6 with Battery 4 and both triggered samples as expected.

It seems this may be a note on/off issue where the Juno-2 is sending note off messages when letting go of the key so the sample playback stops as well. For some reason, no other controllers are causing this issue. Is there a way I can tell Live to ignore note off messages from a particular keyboard controller?

Any ideas?

Not sure about your problem but the solution could be to use the "Note Length" MIDI effect.
MacBook Pro 13" Retina i7 2.8 GHz OS 10.13, L10.0.1, M4L.
iMac 27" Retina i5 3,2 GHz OS 10.11.3 L10.0.1 M4L.

That was a good suggestion, but it doesn't help. No matter how long I set the note length or the decay or release, the sample stops as soon as I let up on the Juno-2 keys. I don't have the problem with any other controller.

After hours of searching, I figured it out. I downloaded MIDI Monitor to see exactly what MIDI signals were being sent out of my Juno-2. On key press, it's sending out Note On. On release, it's sending out Note Off and Control Change (CC): All Notes Off. This is where the problem is. No other controller is sending out the CC event: All Notes Off.

To fix it, I needed to filter out CC events but I couldn't find any MIDI filter plugins that worked for Ableton Live. I tried MiDi FILTER for M4L but it doesn't allow control message filtering. Luckily, I'm using iConnectivity Mio4 as my MIDI interface, which allows MIDI filtering per channel via it's iConfig software. I selected Control Change Events on MIDI Ch 1 and the problem is solved. Now, my Juno-2 is only transmitting Note On and Note Off messages and can trigger full samples properly.

I was about to suggest it. It should definitely be a setting on your controller
