Velocity vs. Volume (and setting "choke groups" in basslines)

Post by OWimOWe » Tue Sep 17, 2019 8:05 pm

I'm using Monark to make a bassline and I noticed I get an interesting effect by taking advantage of the monotimbrality to "choke" my main bassline using other notes. The thing is, I don't want to have those "choke notes" make a sound, and as with many sounds, even if you turn the velocity to zero, they still sound off.

My midi/velocity looks like this:

So the three bass notes on top are the real bassline, and the bottom ones are "choke notes" (with velocity set to 0) basically meant to modulate the top line.

Of course, if I want the choke notes to simply not make a sound, I can deactivate them or move them to a track with no volume, but then they don't choke anything.
Also, some people might say I should just shorten/split the main bass notes, but due to attack/release settings, it doesn't sound the same as choking.

Is there another way to set volume not for a track or clip but only for a single pitch or note within a midi track?
