Akai Apc 40 - How use with Showexpress Lighting software

Hi,
I am trying to use my Apc 40 as a midi controller to control lighting scenes within Showexpress Lighting sofware. I am using a mac. I looked on youtube and found a couple of tutorials, but I cant seem to figure out how to bypass the Apc 40's ableton mode (i think i am supposed to use the apc 40 in a default mode in this case). The tutorial said to open the Apc 40 within the ablton software, and then disconned the Apc 40, and that should put the apc 40 into default mode? This did not work for me, and even if it did, it seems a bit silly to have to open up ableton everytime i want to use the apc 40 as a midi controller. I imagine i am simply missing a step here. Any ideas?
