What did change about audio IO between Live 9.6 (working) and Live 9.6.1 (glitches)?

Post by nc2010 » Thu Oct 03, 2019 11:39 am

Hi,

With Live 10.0 + Windows 7 x64 + MOTU Audio ASIO (latest driver) on 828 mk3 Hybrid connected as USB, I had this problem:
  • 1) Start a new project
  • 2) Play a sine440Hz.wav on Track1 or any other sound that lasts a few seconds, so that you can easily notice small glitches / audio dropouts
  • 3) Do CTRL+T to add new tracks, remove tracks, use the Ableton Live user interface: click, move the mouse, etc. : you will hear glitches (I'll do a video if I have time)
So I spent a few hours installing every past version (all of them 64 bit) and I noticed this:

10.1.1: lots of crackles when doing the step 3) above
9.7.7: lots of crackles when doing the step 3) above
9.6.2: lots of crackles when doing the step 3) above
9.6.1: lots of crackles when doing the step 3) above
9.6: NO crackles at all!!
9.5: NO crackles at all!!
9.2.3: NO crackles at all!!
9.1.10: NO crackles at all!!

Question: What did change about audio IO / ASIO management between Live 9.6 (working) and Live 9.6.1 (glitches)?

PS: I have already tried all the common ways to eliminate glitch / dropouts on Windows PC (power management things, ASIO drivers, increase the latency/buffer, etc.). Interesting reading about this by the way: https://www.cantabilesoftware.com/glitchfree/

Many important changes happened between 9.2 and 9.5. You can check the release notes.

I have now identified the problem between 9.6 and 9.6.1.

Do you know how can I find a more detailed report about the potential problem?
Or how I could contact the development team to make them aware of the problems with MOTU Asio drivers since this change?
Because the problem is still there in Live 10.
(Maybe there's a fix with a custom options.txt setting)

Maybe worth checking your windows 10 settings, as there have been some pretty major updates during that time, some which reset certain settings. Especially power management.
Live 11, M1 Mac Mini, Push 2, Scarlett 18i20 & ADA8200, Softube Console 1 Mk2, Deepmind12, Hydrasynth, Cobalt 8M, Moog Subsequent 25, IK Uno Synth Pro, Plethora X3, Nord Drum 3P

I'm on Windows 7. As mentioned in the first post of this thread, I have already done this:
I have already tried all the common ways to eliminate glitch / dropouts on Windows PC (power management things, ASIO drivers, increase the latency/buffer, etc.). Interesting reading about this by the way: https://www.cantabilesoftware.com/glitchfree/
And by the way, I tested all these different Live versions this week with the same Windows 7 version (no update in the meantime), and here is the result (you can have multiple Live installed on your system):
10.1.1: lots of crackles when doing the step 3) above
9.7.7: lots of crackles when doing the step 3) above
9.6.2: lots of crackles when doing the step 3) above
9.6.1: lots of crackles when doing the step 3) above
9.6: NO crackles at all!!
9.5: NO crackles at all!!
9.2.3: NO crackles at all!!
9.1.10: NO crackles at all!!
Really, all these tests have been made in the same 24-hour period with newly installed Live. No Windows update involved.

Release notes are here:

If you scroll down to 9.6.1, it does appear that the audio engine was tweaked a bit between 9.6 and 9.6.1 .... maybe it’s time to revisit that tweaking?

Yes indeed. How do you think I could ask the development team how to temporarily revert these changes in versions post 9.6.1, e.g. Live 10?
There might be a options.txt switch for this...
