Decent quality, budget external soundcard? (Focusrite v Behringer)

Post by re:dream » Sat Jan 18, 2020 8:53 am

I work on a Mac Mini, Mojave OS. My setup is pretty minimal: Push and Virus synth)

My Roland Edirol FA 101, which has worked without a problem for the last 12 years, has recently started cutting out.

Ableton staff advise me that this is because of driver incompatibility; there is no driver from Mojave onwards

So I am in the market for a replacement. I don't have very deep pockets.

I need MIDI in and out, audio out for the monitors, and audio in from the synth.

At the moment I am choosing between Focusrite (4i4, v 3) and Behringer UMV 404 HD.

The Behringer is a bit cheaper, but I have heard bad things about them in the past.

Any advice?

Thanks

My 2 cents: go for Focusrite - nice units, decent drivers and good sound quality. But Hey, that's only me talking...........

I like my Scarletts and Clarett, but I can't speak to the Behringer. I had a Behringer mixer that was quite good, as is the MIDI pedalboard I still have.

I’d go with the Focusrite every time.

Gonna jump in in a vote for Focusrite. They just work great.

I've used the Focusrites without any issues.

Haven't tried the Behringers though. You probably need to talk to someone who tried both to get the best viewpoint.
