cache rules everything around me

hello folks with laptop-smarts. can someone explain or provide a link to an explanation of the role that cache (L2, L3) plays in the performance of a laptop? E.G. is cache more beneficial to processors working as softsynths or to ram-based softsamplers reading files of a HD. TIA
