WEM Copicat emulation?

Post by BarryS » Wed Mar 04, 2020 5:47 pm

Hello,

One thing I miss from my musical analog days is the WEM Copicat... a tape-loop machine that gave precise, fading echoes.

I've been trying to emulate it in AL9, but with no success... though, in fairness, I'm new to digital music.

Does anyone kindly have some suggestions, please? I really miss it, miss it, miss it...

GSI Watkat might be worth trying, and it’s free. https://www.genuinesoundware.com/?a=showproduct&b=36

Hi TLW!
Many thanks.
Have you managed to get it to show up in Live?
I've copied the WatKat.dll into the VST folder (which is active)... but nothing shows up.
I understand that Live is a bit fussy about these things.

To be honest, it’s quite a long time since I tried it. I prefer Soundtoy’s Echoboy, PSP Echo or Waves Abbey Road J37 tape deck emulator for tape echo effects.

As for getting it to be available in Live, sorry but my computer doesn’t have any .dlls at all and wouldn’t know what to do with one if it saw it.

No idea about an exact emulation, but you can try those tips for generic "tape echo":

https://www.ableton.com/en/blog/get-tap ... vius-beck/
https://mixitecture.com/learn/delay-modes
https://blog.liveschool.net/analog-styl ... eton-live/

Dub Machines is paid, but it is pretty good (also it is based on the Roland tape echo, not Copicat).
https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/dub-machines/

Another approach would be loading impulse responses in Convolution Reverb, but couldn't find any for WEM Copicat,

[edit: In retrospect, people like to do modulation tricks with "tape echo", impulse responses would not be a good option for that.]

Surreal Machines Modnetic is the souped-up VST version of the Magnetic M4L device and it's 50% off at the moment.
It's really very good, try the demo...

Hi garyboozy!

Looks good. Many thanks!

I've dropped them a line to ask if I can use it in Live 9 (not Max). If they reply in the affirmative, I'll definitely get it.

Best wishes and thanks again :) ... also to everyone for their kindness.

hi

I use Watkat quite a lot, it works fine in Live, but as i remember it's a 32 bit plugin so you need to bridge it to 64 bit. I use Jbridger for that

Hi Slatepipe!
Many thanks.
Unfortunately, though I've used jBridge (and followed the instructions carefully), I cannot get the .dll to show up in Ableton.
My other 32-bit VSTs now show up fine. But not Watkat.
Do you have any suggestions, please?
Thanks. :)

P.S. Love the inventiveness of your music! Engaging and intriguing.

hey thanks for checking out my stuff :)

hmm... weird that Watkat doesn't show up for you. I've just checked mine again and it shows up fine. have you tried running as administrator when you open Live? that may do it. or try deleting the dll and downloading it and bridging it again with jbridge?
