Session clips not in sync

Post by Mr D » Fri Jun 12, 2020 11:32 pm

Hi folks,

I've been away from Ableton for a couple of years, just messing around with it again.

I've got a Push 2 now and it seems that it really works best in session view.

I've never been able to get my head around session view but now i'm determined to crack it.

But there's something really confusing me:

Imagine on midi track 1, slot one contains a 8 bar drum pattern.

Now on midi track two i've got a synth bass 8 bar pattern.

Say, in the 8th bar i want to do some kind of bass fill, so i now want to loop around the 8th bar to try a few different things.

Bar 8 of the drums has also got something different happening, so i actually want to loop around BOTH the synth and the drums bar 8.

But i can't work out how to do it. Ok, so i could go in to both clips and manually set the locators. But imagine i'm further down the line with the song and i've got 10 midi tracks. Well, it's not practical to go in and manually loop each clip.

So this is kinda confusing me, How does everyone do it? Is there a mode to lock clips so they always play in sync? I can't actually imagine (outside of performance scenarios) why you'd ever want your clips to not be in (bar) sync.

So yeah, this kinda sums up why i always shied away from session view, because, coming from an old school arrangement view background, session view just didn't make any sense to me.

But with the Push 2, it's kinda forcing me into session view 'cause that's where it works best.

Any advice would be much appreciated, cheers!

play around with the settings in the LAUNCH section of CLIP VIEW.

I love the shit out of FOLLOW MODE.
LEGATO is slick.
search this forum for the use of DUMMY CLIPS, they're key to getting FOLLOW MODE ideas to sync up. ask and I can explain.

for my workflow
- collect ideas in clips and categorizing them into tracks (drum, bass, lead, backing)
- add effects, sends, sidechain basses, group tracks, clean up MIDI drum kits
- create breaks by editing clips' length to make new clips
- make the beginning, middle and end sections in their own section of scenes
- use follow mode to organize the clips and get the clips to march along
- hit play and let FOLLOW MODE take over all playback
- record (bounce) that into ARRANGE View
- put in the details like one would in a Classic DAW
- render to an mp3 and go listen to it in the car.
- get tired of it, post to SoundCloud and move on...

Thanks dude!

It's still not clear to me though!

Could you tell me if the following is possible in session view:

Midi track A contains one, 8 bar (yes, bar) long clip.
Midi track B contains one, 8 bar long clip.

I want to move my "play head" to the beginning of bar 7 and hit play.

I want to hear both clips start playing their contents from the beginning of bar 7.

Could you (or anyone) tell me if this one, very specific thing, is possible?

Thank!

(PS: i know what i want to do is easily and best done in arrange view, but the Push 2 just works so much better in session view, that's why i want to get this working!)

Session View:
move the Start Marker for the Clip to bar 7 and the Clip will launch to the beat at the Start Marker at bar 7.

by 'play ahead' I think you mean starting the Clip at an arbitrary place. Clips always start playback where the start marker is, Legato mode is an exception to this. there isn't a way to 'jump ahead' in the Clip.
