Is there a method to install a user pack of presets?

Post by Angstrom » Fri Jul 31, 2020 3:01 am

How does a user export and import a Pack of Live Presets?

It's a mystery. there seems to be no system any more. There used to be, but not any more.

We can create a Live-Pack of a bunch of Instrument rack presets.
Collect all and save, manage project: create pack.

Now, the old system for installing these presets in this pack was as described by Nico here
[nis] wrote: 1. Go to the "file" menu and select "install Live Pack".
....
4. Right-click on the project folder and select "manage project".
5. In the file manager at the right, go to "export to library" and click the "export" button. This will copy the presets into your library.

But Live no longer has a function of "export to library"

Now we put our presets in the User Library. But there is no connection between the File->"install Live Pack". and any kind of system which adds presets to the User Library.

What happens now is : the install Live Pack asks for a location. If we choose the User Library it will fail, because it's trying to put a project inside a project, which is illegal.
If we try to choose an arbitrary location like the desktop, we are left simply with an Project on the desktop, we can manually open that folder and in our OS, copy and paste the .adg files into our User Library location by manually browsing to

Windows: \Users\[username]\Documents\Ableton\User Library
Mac: Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Music/Ableton/User Library

and pasting them in.

But in technical speak this is what we might call "totally shit"

So, what is the method?

SURELY Ableton didn't build this Browser and Pack management system to lock out users and service 3rd party licensees at the expense of user experience? That surely didn't happen.

Not that it helps but us 3rd Party Licensees got locked out at Live 9.

Yeah. I remember that. All your products suddenly said "legacy" on them in the Ableton UI. As if they were suddenly second class content. It's terrible behaviour.

It's (one of) the weirdest moves by them. A thriving content market of both paid and free content would only help them. But they choose to lock everyone out.

All the pack makers, all the creators.

I can't even see how it benefits them financially. It's incredibly shortsighted. But I shouldn't be surprised. Ableton has been on a downward slide for years.

Ableton ought to prioritise users, and users making and managing and sharing content. But they prioritise franchises and affiliate deals.
