Ableton Live not working on Apple Macbook Pro M1 / Silicon

Post by sirkaet » Wed Feb 10, 2021 3:36 am

Hello folks, I got myself the new MacBook Pro M1 and since day one I tried everything to make it work but it just won't.

Ableton Live 9.7.7 launch but get stuck at initializing midi audio etc screen... I can't get past the app start, can't see anything else that the startup screen then disappears.

Installations are brand fresh, no VST whatsoever, no external device, just a plain Macbook, and a fresh Ableton Live installation.

I tried to download the latest version from ableton.com to try it out, does not work either. I've uninstalled, changed folder, forced rosetta re-install numerous times now and I'm out of solutions.

I think you’d need Live 10 at least. I think Live 9 is behind a bit in macOS versions for support, being as old as it is.

Live is not currently fully compatible with M1 processors:

Yeah I figured that that's why I tried to latest version too and it's not running either

Latest version of Live 9.

After many other tests, Live 9.7.7 latest is not working at all, Live 10.1.30 Trial is working fine, I unfortunately don't have live 10... will Ableton Live 9 be updated at some point to work with M1 under Rosetta 2?
I doubt it but does not hurt to ask

Your out of luck, Live 10 works but NOT Live 9. Extremely doubtful Live 9 will be updated, its time for you to upgrade/update to Live 10/11.

Live 11 is coming very soon too.

L9 will never run on Apple Silicon machines, that's for sure.

I think it's more the version of the OS than the M1 hardware. I know it amounts to the same thing, but I believe older versions of Ableton Live ceased being compatible as of macOS Catalina. I don't think the M1 will run anything older than Big Sur, so you're kind of SOL.

You need to accept with Apple products that you are almost required to update your software every 3-5 years. They don't focus on compatibility as that isn't a good business model to maintain compatibility with older things, if you want to move forward you will have to pay to do so. Otherwise use Windows which still supports Live V1.0 with some work.

just found this out after trying to install my Ableton 9 on my shiny new M1 macbook.... The mac is great, but no being-super points from the Ableton team from me, I also own a Reason license from the same era and it just works, ReCycle? Works - which can be called ancient. Bitwig: Works. Only Ableton does not play ball and has been deteriorating since Big Sur. Since I only use [un]Ableton as a mixer for my synths lately I think an update from me is highly unlikely.
