Live 11: tempo following midi tracks
Live 11: tempo following midi tracks
It looks like ableton's new tempo following feature is only able to follow an audio input. Can it follow the tempo of a midi device you are performing live?
Re: Live 11: tempo following midi tracks
You could just sync Live to midi clock coming from that hardware device, we've been able to do this since Live 1.

I don't know how to set up the routing since I've only been using Live for about 2 weeks now, but, could you route the audio output of your midi track to an audio track and use that as the source?

As long as they're can send MIDI clock (and most can), it should work like that.

Re: Live 11: tempo following midi tracks
My drum pad (MPD218) is able to set a tempo after a few 1/4 note taps similar to the tap tempo feature in Ableton. But it is not able to detect my tempo when playing various drum beats--like the new follow tempo feature--and then send MIDI clock signal at the corresponding BPM throughout a whole performance. Are there other midi controllers that are able to do this? I would love to be able to use this new follow feature with drum racks and other plugins I am performing within Ableton.

Unfortunately it looks like we are only able to use external audio inputs, not internal routing from any tracks in ableton. The only workarounds I can think of would sacrifice the external inputs I need to record voice, guitar, etc...slow.robot wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 4:05 amI don't know how to set up the routing since I've only been using Live for about 2 weeks now, but, could you route the audio output of your midi track to an audio track and use that as the source?
I have been able to connect a patch cable from one of the outputs of my interface to an input, and routing the audio from the plugin to that output and then using the follow tempo feature as normal. But if there is a better way to do this (follow the tempo of a live performed plugin) that I am missing, that would be very cool.

Re: Live 11: tempo following midi tracks
I use a Roland TD25 V-Drum kit as a USB MIDI controller to trigger Live's Drum Rack so I can play custom drum samples by hand, usually breakbeat slices in Sampler. It would be absolutely key for me to be able to use the follow tempo feature with internal audio... I was particularly excited when I saw this feature while looking into what's new with Live 11 and am sad to see that I can't make use of it without using up cables and inputs/outputs, that I really shouldn't have to. seems silly

Yeah, that's a limitation of this new feature.
Alternatively you could try using BeatSeeker.

Some audio interfaces actually do offer virtual audio loopback channels so that you can do these kinds of routing without using up precious hardware in and out.
Still, the solution is far from ideal… I am still not entirely sold on the tempo following. Has anyone posted any successful vids, other than the Ableton branded vids??
