Live 11 ok on High Sierra 10.13.6?

Post by buckman » Tue Mar 02, 2021 3:19 pm

Hi, I hope this is the right forum?

I have just had my upgrade fee, and wanting to jump into Live 11.

I am still on High Sierra 10.13.6 and wondered if anyone else had done the same and it was all working ok?

I am very reluctant to upgrade my MacOS and would prefer using this older Mac with High Sierra 10.13.6 but jumping up to Live 11?
I think I did see that High Sierra 10.13.6 is supported, but I did read of one user saying it was crashing a lot for them and they went back to Live 10?(this could have been a different OS though to be fair)

Should I stick to Live 10 which works fine (I'm also 16GB Ram, and SSD internal) or jump to Live 11?
Any experiences from similar users?

Thanks

Hello, I've used Ableton Live 11 on Hig Sierra last update, it's opens and seems ok with my macpro -2xQuad Xeon (16go ram)... BUT
Yes, it crashed sometimes, very bad, for example, when I change outputs and inputs in the audio preferences, with certains vsti.
I've some problems with Elektron overbridge too, some horrible white noises can suddenly appears...
So be careful, it's the first version of Live 11, maybe you can wait a little before a more stable version.

Thank you

Yes I may wait for a little while longer, as I am sure my upgrade price will stay the same whatever, I just dont want to jeopardise Live 10 working so well at the moment on this High Sierra machine.

I know I will need to upgrade or buy a new M1 Mac eventually but just holding out i guess, but at the same time wanting to use v11

It works perfectly on High Sierra (that's what I'm using)... and certainly more reliably than on a M1 machine that is not supported.

I'm seeing this too, but wasn't able to find exactly why. Would be cool if you could report to support@ableton.com

Done ! bug reported to Ableton. But no answer from them... some serious crash and lot of bugs with some vsti too. Live 11 is a very young instable daw now, but with some cool new features... waiting for the next update.

I am glad to see your post and the various positive replies as I am currently looking for an older iMac to buy second hand and the one I'm homing in on comes with High Sierra.

MOTU withdrew support for my hardware ( Ultralite Mk3 ), which was working absolutely fine on my MacBook pro with an Apple firewire cable/adaptor.

So I had a choice between a published hack to make it work again ( including something along the lines of "permanently disabling system integrity check" ) or to seek out some older hardware and OS. Their "withdrawal of support" was far more a deliberate knacker job, as I see it.

Will it make me buy new MOTU hardware ? I think you can guess the answer :- Never.

Please excuse my riffing off at a bit of a tangent.
I was using Ableton 9 and like you, am tempted to upgrade to 11.

Good afternoon.

I don’t see that it’s not supported, there are drivers for OSX 12 listed. Did they kill it for Ventura compatibility? Or are you referring to firewire?

So Apple killed FW, MOTU isn’t to blame.

Doug,

I think you are looking at the MK3 *Hybrid*. MacOS 10.14 is the end of their support for the Mk3 "not hybrid" ie Firewire only ( screenshot ).
No it is not about Firewire, more about this in my reply to your second message.

I hope the above screenshot illustrates this - it is not showing up in my preview.
If not, this is the MOTU product page that I was trying to show :-

Doug,

No, It's not about that.

In fact, as you will see from the article that I will link below, somebody more desperate than me took the time not only to find a workaround for Catalina (10.15) but was also decent enough to write it up coherently and to share it.

His write up is a step by step how-to, using a thing called Pacifist which allows you to "Install individual files from .pkg installers ..."

In short, you will see from his article that all the elements required for the Ultralite Mk3 to work still exist in other current driver packages for Catalina - there is no reason for it not to work except that MOTU decreed that it would not and their decree can be circumvented.

Pacifist is needed to collect together the existing elements from other MOTU downloads and to install them on your own machine.

But for me this line :-
"First you need to disable SIP (System Integrity Protection) and leave it disabled."
plus the fact that I need my computer to be reliable for other things meant that I couldn't risk the workaround screwing up my only computer.

Some will argue for the right of any company to be able to stop support for X product after Y time and if it were just that, I wouldn't be writing this, although I don't agree with that way of thinking but that is a whole other thing.

But MOTU, as I said originally, deliberately, proactively disabled my hardware in Catalina.
Just leaving it working would have taken less effort on their part.

And my reaction to that is :-I will never buy from them again or encourage others to do so.

Ahh, I see. I have the Hybrid, I didn’t catch that you were discussing the FW version. I think my usb mode is safe for now.

Thanks, I’ll hope for the best. I’m upgrading M1 soon, I’ll expect to purchase a new interface.

I'm still using my old MK3 Hybrid with different generations of macs without any problem, my main setup being a m1 macmini. The only needed step to make it work with silicon mac is turning off this SIP thing.
