Live 11.0.2 causes permanent CPU overload under BigSur
I recently got Live 11 on my MacBookPro (latest MacOS) and it's simply unusable. Even the lightest projects make the CPU go beyond 100%. I’ve been looking for hours for solutions but nothing works.

What processor?
What exact version as I am not sure what "latest" is
What instruments do you have loaded in your project?
You are aware that if you have an M1 processor and BigSur that neither is supported at the moment officially

I got a MBP 2014 (Intel), with MacOS 11.3. The simplest instruments, a drum rack and an analog. Anything will max out the CPU. Ableton explicitly states that AL11 is compatible with BigSur, don’t they?
Re: Live 11.0.2 causes permanent CPU overload
This doesn't look right, but I'm wondering why you're running Big Sur on such an "old" machine. Maybe this OS is a bit too much demanding for this computer. I for sure wouldn't run it on a 2014 machine. I'm not saying this is your problem for sure, but it might be related.
Are you able to compare with L10?

Re: Live 11.0.2 causes permanent CPU overload
Yeah haven't kept up with the state of what is and is not supported with mac, seems something always isn't supported and I still run 10.x on my MBP 2019 because I tend to think a good 6-12 months is needed before updating the OS to a new major version even if it is claimed it works, may not for everyone.
Maybe it's the old conspiracy that Apple cripple your hardware when you update the OS to a certain version? Can you check your activity monitor and see if in fact there is a significant load on the CPU? It wont show maxxed like Live does but should show some sign. Could also be the settings you have for your audio output, buffer (too low)/sample rate (too high). I am guessing you don't have an audio interface?

Re: Live 11.0.2 causes permanent CPU overload
Thank you for your replies! First, to answer your questions: I have been using Live 9 for years without any trouble. Recently, I upgraded to BigSur and Live 11. My audio interface is a Universal Audio Apollo Rack, so some power there. Sure, the MacBook is not the newest, still never run out of capacities on Live 9.
What I did this morning: I downloaded the test version of Live 10 and everything runs like a charm, no CPU overload (still on BigSur, of course). So Live11 and my machine seem not to like each other. My problem is, I don't have a license for Live 10, I directly upgraded to 11. Do you know, if Ableton might "downgrade" my license to Live 10? I much rather miss out on the newest feature and still have a stable work environment.

Best thing to do is reach out to support@ableton.com and see if they can hook you up with a Live 10 license.

So I got rid of BigSur and switched back to High Sierra. Everything is working as expected now. Wasn’t too big of a fan of BigSur anyways. Maybe someone has similar issues.

I have the same issue on a 2019 8-core MBP, with 32GB ram.

Something that helped me is disabling VST plugins. Seems like you also have to update your plugins, but apples Audio Unit seem pretty good. CPU is still outrageous but at least Live is usable.
