MacPro5,1 + MOTU 828Mk3 @ 96KHz - bad stuttering

Post by Squeeb » Fri Apr 30, 2021 11:06 pm

Why is it that in Logic Pro 10.6.2 I can playback 16 channels of audio and software instruments + 8 busses loaded with effects at 96KHz/24bit with a buffer size of 256 without an issue, yet in Live 11 I can't manage 4 tracks with a few basic effects on two aux busses straight into master @ the same KHz + buffer size without it stuttering + popping + breaking up like crazy?

I understand that my rig is ye olde (12 core [24 thread] Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5690 @ 3.47GHz , 32GB 1333MHz memory, Radeon RX 580, MOTU 828 Mk3 FireWire), but surely it should be good enough to manage this level of processing?

Is it simply down to not having modern CPU architecture or is it likely I'm doing something wrong?

Did you compare with L10?

I would expect better results to be fair even though it’s a relatively old rig. It would be worth comparing versions to see what’s what but I’ve run Live 11 on a 10 year old MacBookPro with less threads and RAM and got much better performance than that so it can’t just be age.

Did you also try at 48K instead of 96 just to see if you have the same issues?

Also, what if you test at 512/1024 buffer? May not be suitable for live playing but as part of testing, you want to find where the issue lies and if adjusting things in your audio chain helps, that will point to the overall system as not able to handle the live audio processing. One solution may be to do a backup, wipe everything and start fresh.
