Controller Delay

Post by bbpeckham » Mon May 03, 2021 7:06 pm

Hi all, I seem to get a delay when hearing a note after pressing a key on my controller (either of them - Yamaha P125/Akai APC 25) don't really hear a note til after I've released the key - makes it impossible to play in realtime. Don't think it's anything to do with CPU as happens when there's nothing else going on. Anyone any ideas?

Many thanks

When asking for help with software any time you should always post your OS and computer specs (add it to your signature can save you seconds of extra work). Also what audio interface you are using and what the driver, samplerate and buffer settings are.

I have a suggestion but you need to first fill in the many blanks you have with details so I don't waste more time on a solution that may not fit your problem.

Hi there, many thanks for reply - think my answer may lie in your reply as am not using a specific audio interface - just standard lead from controller back to Ableton. Apologies for my ignorance on this - I'm returning to the tech after many years and previously just used a M-Audio/Midiman 2x4 interface.

Ableton settings (though I have tried adjusting these) :

In/out Sample Rate - 44100
Default SR/Pitch Conversion - High Quality

Input Buffer Size - 256 Samples
Input Latency - 5.80ms
Output Buffer Size - 4096 Samples
Output Latency - 92.9ms
Driver Error Compensation - 0.00
Overall Latency - 98.7ms

I'll add to signature but here for now:

Dell Inspiron 15 TGL 3000 Series 3501
Windows 10 Home (x64)
11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz, 2803 Mhz, 4 Core(s)
8GB RAM DDDR4, 2666MHz
512MB Solid State Drive

Cheers

Latency is your enemy here, you need to get an audio interface to help with that, ideally you need to get that latency down to around 10ms or so for it to be barely felt. Suggest a Focusrite Scarlet using their ASIO driver will help.
Live 11, M1 Mac Mini, Push 2, Scarlett 18i20 & ADA8200, Softube Console 1 Mk2, Deepmind12, Hydrasynth, Cobalt 8M, Moog Subsequent 25, IK Uno Synth Pro, Plethora X3, Nord Drum 3P

Yea, overall latency above 20ms is basically unplayable. Latency is a super confusing topic -- essentially the purpose of the audio interface is to provide a higher performance sound card as well as instrument ports which don't come with computers. :) Good luck!
