Custom swing percentage

Post by omoroca » Sat Jun 12, 2021 8:59 pm

Hi there!

In one of my tunes I tried the triplet mode, but it didn't match the swing of my tune. Triplet mode means, you divide each beat into 3 thirds instead of 2 halfs, so you have 33% - 33% - 33%. What I need is 30% - 30% - 40%, which is not exact triplets and makes the groove less tight and more lazy. Is it possible to customize the grid in Ableton like that? I want to record via MIDI and quantize afterwards, but that's only possible if I can alter the grid to match this particular groove.

An image to demonstrate what I mean:

You might need a particular ‘groove’. This can be custom made and saved to the groove pool.

It might not be visible, but if you do it right (which might require a bit of research and trial and error), it should do the groove you are looking for. And then after, you can commit that groove to the clip.

I think setting the time sig from 4/4 to 5/x will visually fit that 3/3/4 pattern (since 5 * 2 is 10).

[EDIT] If you have M4L then there is cool stuff like Multronome, Nestup and mutateful that allow creating Clips out of weirder ratios:
