Dumb question: find original name of instrument after naming preset

Post by ebinary » Thu Jun 17, 2021 10:38 pm

I've used Ableton occasionally for years, but I never have figured this out:

If you create an instrument (Operator, Analog, Impulse, Simpler) patch and you save the preset name, the instrument title changes to the preset name.

How do you see the name of the original instrument as opposed to the preset (without having to infer it from the set of generic controls that are offered on the GUI)?

It's not a problem with VSTs that have obvious realistic design elements (and may include a name in the GUI), but with Ableton's generic controls, it's not immediately obvious whether this is say Simpler or Sampler.

One thing you could personally do as a way to make it easier for yourself is create folders (or use the default suggestions) and save presets into instrument labelled folders, then you will know what instrument it is before loading.

If the issue is how do you tell AFTER its loaded, I assume by "generic controls" you mean the Instrument Rack Macro controls? Just expand the instrument rack and it will show you what is loaded.

Right-click the device's header and click "show preset name".
