Is comping Video Possible with Ableton 11?

Post by machuwey » Fri Sep 24, 2021 9:15 pm

Hello, I'm planning to use Ableton for some simple multi-clip videos, so I was wondering if anyone who has Ableton 11, was able to comp videos. Also, I'm very interested if there is a way to record my video from my webcam directly to Ableton to accelerate my workflow. Thanks. :D

Yes, you can comp, but you can't record video directly.

On Windows the video support is unreliable, due to Apple dominating video formats (MP4 and Mov) and withdrawing support for Quicktime on Windows (Microsoft doesn't help either, Windows updates break installed codec constantly).

Also, video is very basic on Live, no transitions, no "layers", no video FX.

You can only play parts one after another.

What you can also do is warp/ramp/retime videos, and edit them using the musical grid. I sometimes do this as part of my workflow for making visuals for live performance.

Also, from my experience, there is a short “black screen” that’s unavoidable between clips.
Video in Live could be improved A LOT. The possibilities would be insanely cool if they worked on it.
Number one feature request would be session view video clips.
