Reducing buffer size to fight against audio dropouts ??

Post by ColinMaillard » Thu Oct 07, 2021 3:06 pm

Hi there,

I'm a live sound engineer and I'm working on a dance show running on a Live 10 set (with octophonic diffusion thanks to the Surround Panner Controller) on a new M1 Macbook Pro...

I regularly have audio dropouts, and I really must find a solution to them...

I was 100% sure that when experiencing audio dropouts, we had to increase the buffer size, as I learnt, but here the problem was still coming back from time to time...

Note that we use a M32 / X32 mixer desk as USB audio interface, which is provided by the local tech crew, so we never have the same desk / USB card, making it difficult to identify the problem...

My co-worker (each of us make half of the tour) tried the opposite : he decreased the buffer size, and the problem seemed to disappear... Which lets us like this : 8O .

My question is simple : Does anyone here have an explanation to the fact that our problem seems to be solved by reducing the buffer size ?

Thank you very much ! Have a good day.

colin

PS : I'm french, sorry for my approximative English...

Live10 isn't officially supported on M1 Macs, which could be part of the explanation...
