MIDI play-along but NOT "overdub-along".

Quick thing, PRETTY sure you can do this, but haven't used Ableton in awhile now....

I've created a piano part in a series of session clips with an efx chain that i really like and i simply want to make a simple arrangement of that clip (or series of clips) playing while overdubbing some live piano over the top. If i DO click MIDI Overdub, then the improvised piano gets merged into the existing MIDI clip, which i do NOT want. If i do not click the MIDI Overdub button and click session record, then i don't hear my improvised piano. I seem to remember being able to do this. An obvious workaround is to duplicate the track, remove the clip and record the improvised piano that way, but MUST i do that?

The goal:
Create a series of MIDI clips and be able to record a performance of them while soloing on that same track over the top, without modifying the MIDI clips.

Is it possible? Tips welcome!
cheers!
