exporting distorted tracks

Post by gabush » Thu Jan 20, 2022 11:02 am

hey, i have a couple of tracks that are distorted and i like their sound, i want to use them in my track.
whenever i try to turn down the volume, its sound is weak and not like when it's distorted
is there any way to keep the distorted sound without it actually clipping over 0?
thanks

That's basically hard-clipping in the DAC.

You can try Saturator set to Hard Curve or Digital Clip, or another hard clipper.

Or you can export those Tracks in 16-bit or 24-bit depth, which will clip the audio above 0 dBFS (32-bit won't), then re-import and lower the gain.

I have found that working with 32-bit float files lets me non-destructively remove clipping as head room is somehow preserved, even when the spikes in the waveform appear at maximum amplitude.

I am not sure I understand the second issue you describe. Latency or audio not set to start on 1st beat? Can you describe it in more detail?

PS:
I understand that adding dither is recommended if reducing bit-depth, or if the track was quantized.

so rendering in 32 bit float is basically like using uv22 in cubase?

No, UV22 is dither and 32bit foot is a different kind of file format.

When you go to Export in Live, you’ll see an option you can check to add dither and what type of dither you want to use. Normally I recommend triangular dither unless you know why you would want to use the other ones.

Thanks for responding.

I thought dither was to be added only if reducing bit depth, and if the track was quantized. No?
