Setting up my MacBook for Maximum Efficiency

Post by CVKBT » Wed May 25, 2022 7:57 am

Hello folks,

in a few days, my new MacBook Pro will arrive. I want to set it up for maximum efficiency right from the get-go. The using multiple hard drives section from Ableton already covers a lot, here's a quick summary of what's being suggested:

System Disk (=MacBook Pro Internal Drive):
- Install Ableton here
- Install third party plugins

First External SSD (USB 3 or Thunderbolt suggested):
- Install User Library + Ableton Live Packs here
- Install third party audio libraries
- Save Samples on this drive

Second External SSD:
- Save Audio Recordings here

How would you go about separating third party plugins from third party audio libraries? A lot of times, when you install third party plugins, they automatically come with user libraries. Often, you only have one choice for the installation path. Some plugins allow you to install the library contents in a different location.. but some don't.

And also, do you have any recommendations for SSDs which worked well for you? Additional suggestions are greatly appreciated, too!

Thanks and much love :)

Personally I would keep as much of the music production related software on the system drive, just easier that way. The only thing I would maybe store externally is large sample libraries, and for that Samsung T7 drives have reliable and super fast for me.
