Ableton Live & Dropbox Collab

Post by projectink » Thu Sep 15, 2022 8:18 am

Hi Guys,

I've started a new project with two friends. We all have Ableton Live and the plan is to all work collaboratively (and remotely) on each song in Ableton Live, using only Live's plugins/instruments and save various versions in Dropbox as we go until each song is complete.

For instance:

- V1 (producer 1)
- V2 (producer 2)
- V3 (producer 3)
- V4 (producer 1)
- V5 (producer 2)
- V6 (producer 3)

etc...

However, this brings up a few potential issues to figure out and limitations to try to work around.

1. Can only one of us work on a version at a time, then when we are ready to pass it onto the next person to work on a new version, 'Collect All & Save' and upload that version to Dropbox, or can more than one of us work on a version without using Ableton Live Link or having to create a new file, using Dropbox?
2. Is there a way in Dropbox where if two or three of us open a version at the same time to start to edit it, but want to know who else might be editing it first, we can see this? Some kind of file open trail?
3. What would your recommended way of working from an easy file management/collaborative workflow be in this scenario, to avoid any potential issues?

Thanks

Jeremy

Unfortunately only one person can work on a project at a time, so you’d need to coordinate who’s going to be working on it for each revision. Live doesn’t have built in features for real time versioning.

Maybe there's an online storage service with a library function so you can "check out" the file and see if it's in use.
