High CPU usage even with VST3?

Post by Joe Chapman » Wed Sep 21, 2022 1:12 pm

VST 1-2 were very inefficient. If a plugin was on a track, its presence would add to the CPU's burden even if the plugin was not processing any sound. VST3 was supposed to fix this: a VST3 plugin would not run unless directly called upon and any muted/bypassed plugins would have a barely noticeable impact on resources.

That's not my experience with Ableton Live 11. I'm finding myself with very high CPU usage in projects with only VST3s, and when I mute tracks or even disable all the plugins one by one on muted tracks, the usage stays high. The only remedy is to delete the plugins, at which point the CPU usage comes down with each one nixed.

Is this a known problem with Live compared to other DAWs?

I guess I'll contact Support, then. Didn't want to bother them directly, but enough people have looked at this.

I'm kind of surprised, tbh. I would have thought people would say one way or the other, "No, that's not my experience" or "Yes, that's how it works for me, too" but I don't know how to interpret complete silence.
