Quad G5s

Post by ze2be » Fri Dec 09, 2005 4:21 pm

So theres no reason to get a Quad cpu G5, when exclusivly using Live5?

I mean its got 4 x 2.5 GHZ which gives you 10 GHZ in total. But in most apps, and for this purpose Live gives a 1/4th of the available power; 2.5 GHZ.

So you might as well get the 2.1 GHZ iMac, save less then half the cash, and get almost the same speed?

Hase someone tested the Quad G5 yet?

4x 2.5ghz does not equal 10ghz effective. It's not that simple.

The amount of mainstream software which make proper use of 2 processors let alone 4 could probably be counted on your fingers. And Live is not among them.

Yeah... though if you use Apple programs, its a different story!

But I cant see the point of geting a dual or quad, other then for that.

I need to replace my old G4 867mhz powerbook. Id like to stick to laptops, but im not shure if the latest G4 1.67ghz powerbook is enough. So im thinking about the latest 2.1ghz G5 iMac, or the dual G5 PowerMac.

Id love to here user experiances with the latest powerbook. How many tracks, how many vst instruments etc it is capable of?

If you can wait a little longer, you may be happier with what Apple can supply in terms of a laptop. Intel gear is around the corner.

Should be leaps and bounds beyond current PowerBook G4.

If you can't wait, I'd say go with the iMac. Best bang for the buck from Apple, at least for use with Ableton.

Well, I think it will be some time with the "power" stuf, but the "i" stuf will probably start popping up first, as usual!

Yeah, the iMac is what im thinking about. And yeah I realy cant wait any more, been waiting/delayd since august! I can probably sell it for a fair bit, when the intel stuf comes!

Hi,

set your power management to 'always on' and your cpu won't jump around any longer...
A bunch of gear, cords, and a computer...

72 was changed into 12. I really had to think about that one. OK. No I didn't.
That article really makes me want to jump ship. Of course, even in it's ominous news it suggests the possibility of apple making up with IBM and using thin, low watt G5s for powerbooks.
