I'm new.. can someone please explain this for me..?

Post by Idonotlikebroccoli » Thu Aug 11, 2005 12:38 pm

I've been fiddling around with the demo for quite a while now. The tutorials are excellent and have given me a fairly good understanding of the program very fast. However, I can't find out how to set up a song. Do you have to record it from the session view, or can it somehow be done within the arrangement view as well? I'm used to working with fruityloops.. the only thing I understand in FL that I don't understand in live is how to arrange a song.. Any help would be appreciated.. Especially if some pictures were included ;)

You can record in Session or Arrangement by record enabling the track in either view. I use Arrangement to track more finished songs or live demos. I use Session to record snippets, noises, loops, grooves, etc. That's just me. glenn

Hi Idonotlikebroccoli,

Because it is not a bug or a specific problem I moved this thread into the 'General' forum. It will be read by much more people there too.

regards,
Alex

If you want to arrange (rather than record on the fly), you can move your clips from Session view to Arrangement view and place them where you want them on the timeline. You can also "unroll" your clips by dragging the edges to have them repeat over the desired number of bars.

Drag a clip over the Arrangement view icon in the top right corner to see what I mean.

You can totally use the arrangment view. When I started out I used arrangement primarily because I had come from a more linear recording background.

If you have clips and loops you can just drag them into tracks from the browser and strech them out if them need to be longer. Then you can visually piece together the song any way you please. It's a good way to get going with Live.

I also used to work exclusively in the Arrangement view, as I didn't get the idea of the Session view. Since then I have completely reversed them, and typically only use the Arrangement view to clean up something I recorded by triggering stuff in the Session view.

Wth Follow Actions in session view, some interesting algorithmic music can be made. When I want some gentle breeze of sound in the background and don't want the tedium of having to copy/paste clips in arrangment view. i'll create randomized clips in session view and record them playing back.

No two recordings are ever alike!

I use arrangement view for piecing everything together, mainly by dragging Live Clips into the arrangement view. Then, I consolidate the tracks, make a big Live Clip from them, then drag that Live Clip into Session view for gigging.

I really wish the work I did in Arrangement view would automatically show up in Session view...

Also, I find that I end up saving a copy of the Live set before consolidation, just in case I want to go back and work on it without everything consolidated into one big track.

Anyone got a better way?

You can make your arrangement show up in session view by highliting all clips, and dragging them to the session view switching icon on the right. They'll get in there great, and you can have fun jamming new mixes.

Tried that... it didn't work!

All it does is switch to session view. It doesn't bring the clips with it.

Well that's odd. I've done that a lot. I'm using version 5.01, you?

I got it...

You have to then drag the first clip to where you want it to be after switching views.

Still, top tip!

Thanks!

I'm on 5.0.1 on a Mac.

I thought you could drag 'n drop the clips on the view switching icon. Your shortcut basically eliminates having to hit the 'tab' key.
