I'd take a serious look at Minimonsta and impOSCar just to get your feet wet. They are both great. The Arturia plugins are cool but use a lot of CPU. Depending on your style I think the reFX synths are really good (Vanguard, PlastiCZ, and Slayer 2).

I'm a fan of the Native Instruments line. The Arturia stuff is also quite good, but CPU hungry in a way that requires a pretty massive system to use fully.

NI is a great place to look, particularly FM7 and Pro53.

If you're using a Mac, Automat is where it's at.

Soft synths that are good without alterating presets IMHO:
Ni pro 53, Fm7, absynth 3
Gmedia Imposcar, minimonsta
Refx Vanguard
Korg legacy
motu mx4 2
U & I metasynth
Vote for Pedro.

I love my Reaktor. Any sound you can conceive, you can create with Reaktor. The know how to do it will take you some time, but once you understand it, there are no limits. I'm a big fan of Logic's ES2 as well. Great for screaming leads.
