Yet another master channel vst thread....

Post by Agent47 » Wed Aug 24, 2005 8:20 pm

OK guys, I did some extensive searching and would like updated opinions:

What are you running on your master channel while recording mixes?

LIGHT compression via Compressor 2 and a VERY SMALL amount of Saturator (Not sure about it yet, tho.
15" PB 2.5 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 750 GB HD, Live 9 still no cue points or program change messages?!?. Doesn't do shit.

PSP Vintage warmer - 4Front Auxiter - Waves L2

This is my master chaining FXs. I get a good sound on FM radio and in clubs...

-Tritone Digital Hydratone (to add just a little bit of "fire"),
then..
-Tritone Digital Colortone Beta (just the littlest bit of LA2A or LA3A color),
then..
-WaveArts FinalPlug (not too much limiting, i mostly use its resampling and ditherer for bringing the mix down to 16bit/44.1khz, something i used to do in post, but its so CPU light i just do it in realtime now. Plus it means i can mix at 44.1khz which is much less CPU demanding as well.)

Yeah I am running the PSP Vintagewarmer as well..I like it. :)

Keep in mind, I am asking about recording mixes which will then be rendered and normalized in Peak or whatever. I have tons of plugins so I just need to narrow it down to the best choice for mixing.

is the 4Front Auxiter similar to the BBE maximizer? I dont think I can get the Auxiter for mac.

BBE sonic maximizer is also a valid option, but use it in a very small amount...

Curious why you would run anything durning the record? Why not wait until after?

Actually I had the same thought. I was running the BBE last night and it sounded great but bogged the CPU down a bit. would I be better to add these master channel effects in after rendering?

If i want to make a mixed cd, i just render the mix without any mastering fx. I open the file in wavelab and adjust the FXs and render it again. I found that it was faster and safer...recently i tried to render with fxs in Live and took 90mns to render a 74 mns mix!!!! and finally there was some drops in the sound in the middle of the mix  !!! (i think there's a problem with Waves plugins).

Silverspike Tapeit is great for recording mixes from the master track to .wav on the fly.

For mastering, sometimes additional EQ using EQ4, then maybe Voxengo Soniformer, then maybe some slight reverb, but always Voxengo Elephant.
UTENZIL a tool... of the muse.

This look like it’s going to be a very nice plugin when the beta periods finished and it’s available to the general public.

What a lovely free gift from Tritone Digital definitely something to look forward to.

-10-12 instances of beat repeat
-6-8 supa trigga
-5 ping pong delays
-3 utilities turned up to 35 db each

Makes everything Nice Nice

A similar thought actually crossed my mind when I visited the Tritone Digital site, I looked at all the stuff they seem to be working on and your post with “right now i'm using a beta version of a plug that i cannot divulge any information on just yet” came to mind.
But as most of my thoughts are usually wrong or just stupid, I thought I’d not start any speculation on the subject, although I think the cats out the bag now.

One reason I havent just recorded my live mix into audio hijack pro(which also allows VST plugins) is that sometimes when I use three or 4 tracks(especially complex warped) at a time Live locks up and bumps over 100% cpu use, so it sounds all crazy, yet when I render it sounds fine. While this wont work for Live use it does for mixes. Strange..

I guess I can try to record direct into audio hijack pro and then normalize in Peak afterwards...whatcha think?
